View from this side utilises a vernacular family collection of Kodachrome transparencies to interrogate mortality, familial lineage, and the physical act of remembering. By integrating the hand into the photographic frame to hold these slides, the work establishes a tangible, tactile connection between the living present and the archival past. The title adopts the functional orientation text printed on vintage slide mounts, repurposing a technical instruction into a poignant metaphor for the threshold of mortality and the separation between the viewer and those who have passed away, or grown into something new.
The original images evokes a nostalgic, unvarnished simplicity, which is further complicated by projecting the slides using natural sunlight. This transient illumination experiments with the softening and hardening of past imagery, mirroring the fluid, deteriorating nature of human memory itself.
